Imagine, se quiser (!), que é um lindo dia. É o seu dia de folga do trabalho e decide levar a sua família para fazer um tempo de lazer bem merecido.
 

É claro que paga, sejamos honestos, um pouco de dinheiro para as suas entradas.
 

Todos lhe dizem que o próprio sítio é lindo e vale a pena.
 

Decide então ir numa das visitas guiadas disponíveis, esperando ter um bom tempo no seu dia de folga.
 

Um guia pouco agradável aproxima-se e arrasta-o à volta do sítio durante as próximas três horas, falando num tom monótono sobre pessoas das quais você nunca ouviu falar e o que eles fizeram durante um determinado período.
 

Os seus filhos começam a se irritar, a sua esposa está tentando não bocejar, e você não pode deixar de pensar que a reunião no trabalho de ontem foi mais interessante do que isso.
 

Vai para casa, não sabendo nada novo, entediado e desejando que tivesse acabado de passar o dia em casa, noutro sítio, ou mesmo sem fazer nada.
 

Isso parece ser uma ocorrência muito frequente nas atracções turísticas em geral. A história é vista como um conhecimento rigoroso que favorece apenas académicos que o protegem com unhas e dentes. A história passa a ser tão aborrecida como os trabalhos domésticos.
 

Excepto que todos sabemos que não é. A história está cheia de factos e anedotas estranhos e maravilhosos e personagens interessantíssimos.

Na minha humilde opinião, os guias turísticos deviam tentar tornar nosso património tão emocionante e absorvente como nós mesmos sabemos que é. E não apenas entre nós, mas para todos os que fazem o esforço para visitar nossos sítios de interesse.  

Eu prefiro ter essa visão diferente. Eu sei que, por experiência própria, de um grupo de excursão de 20 pessoas, apenas 5 terão conhecimento prévio da história do sítio. Pelo menos 10 foram arrastados com a promessa de um brinde no final. Os outros 5 terão visitado porque foi a atracão de visitantes mais próxima para eles e eles estão apostando que eles estarão interessados.
 

Um guia turístico “tradicional” focará as primeiras 5 pessoas durante o período da do tour, e 75% de seu grupo de turismo vai para casa insatisfeito.

Nós não devemos, como guias turísticos, nos concentrar em obter 75% interessados e entusiasmados, além de melhorar o conhecimento da minoria? Essas 15 pessoas não devem ser ignoradas porque não sabem muito sobre o sítio ou assunto que o guia está a falar

Eu escolhi uma carreira como guia porque compartilhar o meu próprio conhecimento e entusiasmo é tão divertido como ganhar esse mesmo conhecimento. Eu nunca consegui entender por que tantas pessoas se candidataram a empregos onde o pensamento de compartilhar conhecimento é um conceito abominável para eles.

Isso não quer dizer que eu me considere a única guia turística interessante do mundo!!
 

Há imensos de nós espalhados generosamente. Mas eu gostaria de ver mais de nós tomando a abordagem de que a história é mais do que uma longa lista de datas meticulosamente memorizadas.
É a história do nosso passado recolhido como comunidade. 

O facto histórico é algo a ser compartilhado e discutido. Isso pode ser absorvido num passeio fascinante que invade o desejo de saber mais.

Isso deve ser o papel de um guia turístico.

Imagine, if you want (!), It's a beautiful day. It's your day off from work and you decide to take your family to make a well deserved leisure time.

Of course you pay, let's be honest, a little money for your tickets.

Everyone tells you that the place itself is beautiful and worth it.

 

He decides to go on one of the guided tours available, hoping to have a good time on his day off.

 

An unpleasant guide comes up and drags you around the site for the next three hours, talking monotonously about people you've never heard of and what they've done for a certain period of time.

 

Your kids are getting irritated, your wife is trying not to yawn, and you can not help thinking that the meeting at work yesterday was more interesting than that.

 

He goes home, not knowing anything new, bored and wishing he had just spent the day at home, somewhere else, or even doing nothing.

 

This seems to be a very frequent occurrence in tourist attractions in general. History is seen as a rigorous knowledge that favors only academics who protect it with nails and teeth. History is as boring as housework. 

Except we all know it is not. The story is full of strange and wonderful facts and anecdotes and very interesting characters.

In my humble opinion, tour guides should try to make our heritage as exciting and absorbing as we ourselves know it is. And not just between us, but for all those who make the effort to visit our sites of interest.
 I'd rather have that different view. I know from experience, from a tour group of 20 people, only 5 will have prior knowledge of the history of the site. At least 10 were dragged with the promise of a toast at the end. The other 5 will have visited because it was the attraction of visitors closest to them and they are betting that they will be interested. 

A "traditional" tour guide will focus the first 5 people during the tour period, and 75% of your tour group goes home dissatisfied.
 

Should not we, as tour guides, focus on getting 75% interested and enthusiastic, as well as improving the minority's knowledge? These 15 people should not be ignored because they do not know much about the site or subject that the guide is talking about

 

I have chosen a career as a guide because sharing my own knowledge and enthusiasm is as much fun as gaining this same knowledge. I've never been able to understand why so many people have applied for jobs where the thought of sharing knowledge is an appalling concept to them.

This does not mean that I consider myself the only interesting tourist guide in the world !! 

There are so many of us scattered generously. But I would like to see more of us taking the approach that history is more than a long list of meticulously memorized dates. 

It is the history of our past gathered as a community.  

The historical fact is something to be shared and discussed. This can be absorbed in a fascinating ride that invades the desire to know more.  

This should be the role of a tour guide.

Eu quero ser um Guia de Turismo!

Quando as pessoas me dizem: "Eu gostava mesmo era de ganhar a vida a passear!" Eu começo a falar sobre o grande número de oportunidades por cá e lá fora.

Antes de me estabelecer como profissional de informação turística - guia de turismo, passei algum tempo relembrando e aprendendo o que se encaixava melhor atualmente na organização e gestão de grupos, na liderança de pessoas através de alguns dos pontos de maior interesse turístico nas ilhas dos Açores e muito especificamente nas 3 ilhas onde trabalho com mais frequência.

Pode ser um trabalho de sonho se soubermos onde estamos a entrar. Para além das informações de interesse, muitas vezes servimos de terapeutas improvisados para os viajantes.

A verdade é que não há nenhuma maneira de abordar o trabalho de seu sonho, mas ajuda a pesquisar o maior número de informações possíveis.

Um diretor de turismo, por exemplo em agências de viagens ou operadores turísticos, é o responsável pela logística, confirmações, planeamento, controle de danos e dinâmicas de grupo. Eles também dão algumas informações sobre história e cultura.

Já um guia de turismo dá uma narração específica de um lugar, muitas vezes junta-se ao grupo de turismo por apenas algumas horas, envolvendo-se na própria experiência do visitante.

Se a vontade é entrar neste mundo fantástico, iniciar como guia local é excelente e perfeito se o objetivo é ir para casa todas as noites. A partir daí a experiência te dirá se queres avançar para outros destinos ou não, com durações mais longas ou mais curtas.

Outra dica que ajuda muito é conhecer os profissionais que já existem, alguns deles não tem problemas em dar uma ajuda numa fase inicial. E essa ajuda é preciosa!

Esta profissão é tudo menos de rotina, é uma oportunidade de fazer algo diferente todos os dias, e conhecer lugares e pessoas diferentes também.

Nem tudo são rosas, ficam também os Contras:

A maioria dos guias de turismo são freelancers, o que traz seu próprio conjunto de desafios, como a necessidade de seguros para independentes, pagamentos de impostos e outras contribuições ao estado, dificuldades em agendar trabalho suficiente - especialmente no início e em ápocas baixas.

As noites de sono descansado só vão chegar quando estiverem confirmadas e reconfirmadas as atividades do próximo dia, do próximo mês….

Outro assunto importante é que todos os visitantes são diferentes, e uns serão mais difíceis de agradar que outros, e esse é o verdadeiro desafio. Como diria o formador de comunicação de uma das formações que realizei “não foi o guia que tive azar com o grupo, o grupo é que teve azar com o guia".

Claro que às vezes, há visitantes muito exigente e insistentes, outros até podem dominar um assunto, e até podem saber mais sobre um determinado assunto que o guia. Um exemplo, um professor universitário de arquitetura irá certamente encontrar detalhes numa determinada construção, que um guia de turismo poderá nem ter informação específica, por não ser considerada informação turística de relevância. Mas mesmo que eu pense que é a pergunta mais pesada/parva que já ouvi na minha vida, eu tenho que responder para que eles se sintam bem com isso, e sempre que possível convidá-los a nos explicar com maior detalhe.

Aqueles agendamentos de almoços de amigos e família podes esquecer por várias semanas ou meses nos períodos de época alta, ignorar eventos importantes faz parte de quem quer progredir nesta área.

Uma última dica é: ame o trabalho que tem! Experimente uma aula, comece localmente e fale com tantas pessoas quanto possível, quem fez isso ou está fazendo isso, essas são as pessoas que te vão abrir os olhos.

I wish I was a Tour Guide

When people say “I wish I could travel for a living!” I start talking about the sheer number of opportunities here and out there.

Before I established myself as a tourist information professional - a tour guide, I spent some time reminding and learning what best fits today in the organization and management of groups, leading people through some of the points of greatest tourist interest in the islands of the Azores and very specifically on the 3 islands where I work more often.

It can be a dream job if we know where we are coming in.

In addition to the information of interest, we often serve as improvised therapists for travelers.

The truth is that there is no way to approach the work of your dream, but it helps to research as much information as possible.

A tourism director, for example in travel agencies or tour operators, is responsible for logistics, confirmations, planning, damage control and group dynamics. They also give some information about history and culture.

While a tour guide gives a specific information about a place, often joins the tour group for a few hours, engaging in the visitor's own experience.

If the will is to enter this fantastic world, my advice is to start as local guide, it’s excellent and perfect if the goal is to go home every night. From there, the experience will tell you if you want to move on to other destinations or not, with longer or shorter durations.

Another tip that helps a lot is to meet the professionals who already exist, some of them have no problem helping you at an initial phase. And this help is precious!

This profession is anything but routine, it's an opportunity to do something different every day, and meet different places and people as well.

Not everything is roses, there are also the Cons:

Most tour guides are freelancers, which brings their own set of challenges, such as the need for independent insurance, tax payments and other contributions to the state, difficulties in scheduling enough work - especially at the beginning and during low season.

Nights of restful sleep will only arrive when the activities of the next day, of the next month are confirmed and reconfirmed...

Another important issue is that all visitors are different, and some will be harder to please than others, and that's the real challenge.

A communication trainer of one of the courses I took said once "the guide wasn’t unlucky with the group, it was the group that had bad luck with the guide".

Of course sometimes there are very demanding and insistent visitors, others may even master a subject, and may even know more about a particular subject than you as a guide.

An example, a university professor of architecture will surely find details in a certain construction, that a tourist guide may not even have specific information, since it is not considered relevant tourist information. But even though I think it's the heaviest / silly question I've ever heard in my life, I have to answer something so that they feel good about it, and whenever possible invite them to explain us in more detail.

Do you know those family and friends lunch schedules? Well, you can forget them for several weeks or months in high season periods, ignoring important events is a part of whoever wants to make progress in this area.

One last tip is: love the job you have! Try a class, start locally and talk to as many people as possible, who did it or is doing it, these are the people who will open your eyes
